When a village already has 12 pickleball courts, a heated resort pool, a wellness center and spa, a café, a restaurant and a golf simulator, what is an 86,000-square-foot club across Lakewood Ranch actually for?
That question gets practical tomorrow. Life Time Lakewood Ranch at 5000 Lakewood Ranch Blvd N says it is "Arriving October 12." For Del Webb Catalina, the 55+ village near Lorraine Road, 44th Avenue East and Rangeland Parkway, most of what Life Time offers is already on the home campus. What it adds fits in a short list, and the district growing around it opens in stages over the next several months.
The overlap is larger than the square footage suggests
Start with what Catalina already has. Lakewood Ranch's village page for Del Webb Catalina describes a 15-acre resort amenity campus on the edge of a 70-acre lake. It lists 12 pickleball courts, eight of them covered, a grand clubhouse with a wellness center, a resort pool and a Lifestyle Director. The same page lists a café, a wellness center and spa, a heated resort-style pool, Horizon Restaurant, a golf simulator, 12 miles of walking trails and 101 acres of preserve and conservation areas. The builder's materials add a social ballroom, an art studio, a fitness center and a movement studio.
Set that beside Life Time's lineup as Your Observer reported it in March and the two lists mostly match.
| Category | Del Webb Catalina campus | Life Time Lakewood Ranch |
|---|---|---|
| Pickleball | 12 courts, 8 covered | 14 courts, 3 indoors, with pickleball lounges and a bistro |
| Pools | Heated resort-style pool | Leisure pool with waterslides, plus two lap pools |
| Recovery | Wellness center and spa | Spa, plus hot and cold plunge pools |
| Fitness | Fitness center and movement studio | Group fitness studio; cardio, strength and functional-training floor |
| Food | Café and Horizon Restaurant | Bistro |
| Other | Golf simulator, art studio, social ballroom | Work lounge, Kids Academy and Kids Gym |
Read across the rows and the overlap covers outdoor pickleball, a resort pool, spa services, a workout floor and somewhere to eat. A Catalina resident can already do all of that on a lakeside campus inside the gate.
What lands in the gaps
- Indoor courts. Of Life Time's 14 pickleball courts, three are indoors. Catalina's village page says eight of its 12 courts are covered and does not list any indoor courts. Covered courts handle sun and a passing shower. Indoor courts change what is possible on an August afternoon.
- Lap lanes. Life Time is planning two lap pools alongside its leisure pool. Catalina's village materials describe a heated resort-style pool and do not list a lap pool.
- Contrast therapy. The Observer reported hot and cold plunge pools next to Life Time's spa. Life Time's own page features cold plunge alongside its CTR reformer class, which it describes as "reformer training designed for strength, alignment, and lasting tone."
Life Time's vice president of corporate communications, Natalie Bushaw, described the club's purpose to Your Observer this way:
"Our goal is for the club to serve as a hub for healthy living, healthy aging and healthy entertainment — a place where individuals, couples and families can build daily habits around wellness and connection."
Some details aren't public yet. In March, Your Observer reported that membership pricing would be shared closer to opening, that waitlisted members would get priority access and that membership would be limited. The sources reviewed for this piece don't give hours or a membership tier aimed at active adults. The club's number is 941-870-1250.
The club is the first big piece of a district that opens in stages
Life Time is one part of a larger plan. In the same March report, Amanda Zipperer of Lakewood Ranch Commercial told the Observer that an entertainment district had been envisioned years ago as part of Lakewood Ranch's long-term development strategy. The district sits on the Sarasota County side of the Ranch and is expected to be built out by early summer 2027. Life Time sits across Lakewood Ranch Boulevard from the Professional Parkway cluster, next to Gold Coast Eagle Distributing.
Here is the order things open, based on current reporting:
- Already open: Urban Air Adventure Park on Professional Parkway, which opened last September. It is 60,000 square feet, and its owners call it the largest of the 400 Urban Air locations in the country.
- October 12: Life Time's scheduled opening date.
- Winter 2026: Backyard Social, directly south of Urban Air. Its website now says "Opening Winter 2026." Owners Mat Baum and John Mann had aimed for mid-November when the Observer checked in last March.
- May 1, 2027: SkyTrack Family Entertainment Center, directly north of Urban Air, which broke ground March 10.
Backyard Social is likely the next new evening option. There's no kitchen. Food trucks will be parked permanently outside, and the lineup so far includes Gigi Gourmet, Gigi's Chicken Coop, Gyros2Go, Lobster Chef and Box Car Cantina. Games include duckpin bowling, darts, shuffleboard, cornhole and a golf simulator. It is open to all ages until 9 p.m. and limited to guests 21 and older after that. The 12,500-square-foot building can be opened up or closed and air-conditioned depending on the weather. Outside, a lawn will have a tiki bar and a 6,000-square-foot stage for live music.
SkyTrack is planned around a half-mile electric go-kart track that winds across three stories at up to 27 miles per hour. Plans also include a 16-lane bowling alley, more than 85 arcade and virtual reality games, an indoor mini-golf course, two bars and a restaurant serving steaks and carpaccio. The 16 lanes would give Lakewood Ranch something the Observer said it didn't have at the time: a bowling alley.
The staggered schedule matters for anyone deciding on a membership. Life Time arrives months before the food-truck lawn and the dinner-and-bowling building on the other side of the boulevard. The full corner won't look the way the renderings suggest until about May 2027.
Lorraine Road itself stays the same for a while
The district is changing quickly, but the Catalina end of the drive is changing slowly. In a September 22 report on East County roadwork, Your Observer said the full Lorraine Road improvement between State Road 64 and State Road 70 is estimated at $85.2 million. Of that, $11 million has been budgeted and allocated for design and land acquisition, and nothing else is budgeted over the next five years.
Clark Davis, Manatee County's interim director of public works, told the Observer the issue is the road's design more than its traffic volume. Traffic counts between State Road 70 and Rangeland Parkway show the road is not over capacity, but Davis called the corridor "awkward" because of all the turns into and out of driveways. "It's not so much about capacity as it is about having the right road for the right place," he said.
Two dated changes are coming:
- A traffic signal with protected left turns at Lorraine Road and 59th Avenue East, scheduled before the 2027-28 school year at the new Rangeland High School.
- A roundabout where University Parkway meets Legacy Boulevard and Deer Drive, which Schroeder-Manatee Ranch is set to begin building in spring 2027.
That puts the busiest stretch of change on both ends of the drive in 2027, around the time SkyTrack is due to open.
Closer to home this week
There are two events on the Lakewood Ranch calendar before the district adds its next opening. The Lakewood Ranch events calendar lists Live Music at The Plaza on Saturday, October 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. It also lists the Farmers' Market at Lakewood Ranch on Sunday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check the calendar for updates the week of, since organizers sometimes change times.
Back inside the gate, the home campus is still the everyday base. SRQ Daily reported that Catalina's pickleball courts and the Renown Lifestyle House amenity center were completed in time for an April 2025 lifestyle event, two months after the February grand opening. The builder's materials still describe some resort amenities as underway. Measured against that campus, Life Time adds three indoor courts, two lap pools and a pair of plunge pools.
